Cavalier boys take track meet

Morganton — The East Burke High boys track and field team won 11 of 17 events to finish in first place at a Northwestern 4A Conference quad meet at Freedom High on Thursday.
The Cavaliers finished with 95 points to out-distance McDowell High, which took second place with 65 points. Freedom finished a close third with 53 points and Alexander Central High tallied 28 points, good for fourth place.
"The season is still early, but we are beginning to click on all cylinders," said East Burke head coach Odell Williams. "The kids are really working hard to defend their NW4A championship."
East Burke's powerful Tyler Shatley won the shot put and the discus throw, speedster Bradley King won the 100- and 200-meter runs, Ben Canipe captured the 1,600-meter run, Chance Sigmon won the 800-meter run and Aaron Causby finished the 3,200-meter run.
Tanner Anderson took first in the high jump and multi-sport athlete Josh Debro won the long jump. In addition to the individual events, the Cavs also won the 1600- and 3200-meter relays.
Freedom picked up wins in the 800-meter relay and 400-meter run, with Lesley Bailey capturing first place. Patrick Hill also won the triple jump.
The final three first-place finishes for the men were from McDowell.
The next NW4A meet is at Watauga on Wednesday.
