Saturday morning I attended a preschool conference at WPCC.These functions usually offer a variety of classes all day long to satisfy continuing education requirements etc.My first class was "Behavior Intervention Strategies:You want to try what?".That should have clued me in right there......I work in early childhood education. For the last 15 years I have watched the steady decline in expectations behavior wise in our children.Present trends are deleting the concept of a consequence (punishment) for any type of action because it is not "politically correct".The newest one of these trends that we were introduced to Saturday was "Time In".Since time out implies punishment and teacher control and provokes uncomfortable feelings in the child,it is no longer acceptable.Instead a teacher should say"You look upset.Do you need time to calm your body? You might want to go to a quiet corner to relax and maybe do a puzzle or play with some play doh".It was then stressed to the class that this technique must be given plenty of time to work before you could judge it's effectiveness. What ever happened to stressing obedience? What ever happened to teaching natural consequences for inappropriate behavior? What is wrong with the concept of punishment? Our culture has grown so far away from the Lord that any mention of obedience or punishment is taboo.Personal accountability is non-existent and it's starting almost from birth now.PROVERBS 20:11 Even a child is known by his actions,by whether his conduct is pure and right.
